Woodbine honors Chief Petty Officers City's mayor presents chiefs with award for the planting of more than 100 trees

The City of Woodbine held its annual Arbor Day Celebration at the River Walk Feb. 15. That morning, residents and project leaders gathered to recognize the hard work of all the volunteers, and the mayor of Woodbine dedicated a Trident Maple to the NSB Kings Bay Chief Petty Officers for volunteering to plant 141 trees along the River Walk several weeks ago. Navy College hosts open house
Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay showed its support for off-duty education as Navy College held its annual open house Feb. 13. More than 100 people walked through the Kings Bay Campus doors and checked out the facility, met instructors and enjoyed snacks and refreshments such as cookies, fresh fruit, candy, coffee, and juice.

Sub League pays tribute to USS Maryland officer
Members of the Naval Submarine League gathered at the Kings Bay Chief Petty Officer's club for their quarterly meeting to exchange ideas and plans for fundraisers and to present their quarterly award for leadership excellence to Lt. Robert Savering of the USS Maryland for his superb leadership as weapons officer.

Chapel hosts Crafts and Conversation
Many military spouses may feel left out of the military community, as they may be new to an area and end up sitting at home with their children while their Sailor or Marine is on duty. That's why several, Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay military spouses meet Thursdays at Fellowship Hall for Crafts and Conversation, a workshop for spouses to interact while working together on various projects.


VITA ready to help service members during tax season
Tax season began as soon as the W-2 forms were issued last month and will run through April 15. Many tax preparation companies offer the enticement of instant payouts to file your taxes, getting the larger return as payment later. These are usually short team loans at high-interest rates in disguise; loans against money that is already yours. Fortunately, the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) offers free electronic tax filing to all active duty and retired military and their family members.
