New chiefs make their own history

History and traditions exert a profound influence upon human behavior. This effect is particularly marked in professional organizations such as the military, which because of imposed discipline, lends itself to passing on and perpetuating venerated customs, heroic traditions and dignified ceremonies. The Navy is a continuum of success, and its customs, traditions, and memories of past heroes help today's Sailors identify with the Navy's Core Values. Crack down on camera phones
What was once affordable to high-end mobile phones users only is now available to virtually everyone. Camera phones now saturate the market and are as common as the Camden gnat. As first reported in The Periscope in April 2005, camera phones were banned from the Waterfront Restricted Area and other sensitive areas on base. If you have one, it is best to leave it at home or it won't be yours any more.


Over the limit, under arrest
The Labor Day holiday is known as the unofficial end of the summer season, a final time to spend some quality time with family and friends. As with any holiday the issue of alcohol comes to the forefront, especially drinking and driving. If you decide to have a few ''cold ones,'' either give your keys to a sober friend or have a designated driver or you could be spending your holiday behind bars.

New editor joins Periscope
A new era started for the Kings Bay Periscope this week as Mike England assumed the role of editor for the weekly newspaper, replacing Craig Richardson.

Navy leadership concerned about motorcycle safety
The number of dead is 34 and climbing. This isn't the number of casualties in Iraq or Afghanistan, but the number of Sailors and Marines who have died while operating a motorcycle this year.
