Remembering the fallen

For many Americans, Sept. 11, 2001 is still fresh in their minds and hearts. Five years have passed since the tragedies of that day and Americans have not forgotten. This past Monday, students, teachers, firefighters, police, base officials and community leaders gathered at Camden County High School to pay tribute to the victims and the heroes of that tragic day. For SW1 Jose Ramirez, becoming a U.S. citizen was an important duty he needed to perform for both himself, and his family. Originally from San Salvador, El Salvador, he achieved his goal Aug. 31 after five long years.

NSB Kings Bay celebrates Hispanic American heritage
History has shown Hispanic Americans have played an important role in the development of the United States. Glasgow Farragut, a Hispanic American of Spanish decent, invented the first steam powered submarine and double hull and was the first U.S. Navy full-fledged admiral. The current First Lady of Florida, Columba Bush, born in Mexico.

Hero dog, handler honored
Loyal, faithful, dependable, helpful and reliable have all been used to describe man's best friend. The partnership of dog and man has included assistance with herding and hunting, an early alarm system, and the companionship many know and love. At NSB Kings Bay, dog handlers have a unique relationship with their military working dogs. The dogs, along with their handlers, are deployed worldwide to support the global war on terrorism, helping to safeguard military bases and activities and to detect bombs and other explosives before they inflict harm. They are also trained to sniff out drugs and even track scents.

NSB Kings Bay, Camden County Firefighters participate in joint training
Five years ago, the concept of a ''brotherhood of firefighters'' became synonymous with the heroic efforts displayed during the Sept. 11 attacks. This brotherhood can be found in cities, counties and townships throughout the United States. Their professionalism and bonding can be sensed instantly by anyone involved in a fire, a car accident or a local community event.
