Sailors build home for local family

With average housing costs on the rise, many families are forced to rent substandard apartments or homes to live in. This forces many families with children to live in a less than desirable environment. Disadvantaged children are more likely to indulge in at-risk activities, receive poor grades in school or drop out altogether. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, poor students are twice as likely to drop out of high school as middle income students. [ More ]


Combined Federal Campaign get under Way Oct. 16
The American Red Cross, the American Cancer Society and the Boy Scouts of America are all non-profit agencies that depend on donations to operate. Although contributing to several different charities involves filling out many forms and setting up allotments, there is a program that allows Sailors, Marines and Department of Defense employees to donate to more than 20,000 charities with a stroke of a pen. By filling out one slip of paper, you can reach out and touch the lives of those who need your help.

Kings Bay FFSC honors Ombudsman
Life comes at you fast, Ombudsmen are always there was the theme of the evening as the NSB Kings Bay Fleet and Family Support Center honored ombudsmen for the assistance they provide to the military families with an appreciation dinner Sept. 27.


FFSC conducts suicide intervention workshop
According to the Naval Environ-mental Health Center, suicide is the number two cause of death for Sailors and Marines over the last decade. An article in The Virginian-Pilot (May 2, 2006) stated that of the 20,000 submarine Sailors there have been nine reported suicides in the last 16 months, which is about three times the rate of other military organizations, and twice the overall national rate. Suicide is preventable if the warning signs are detected early.

Auto Hobby Shop provides hassle-free auto maintenance
For many Sailors and Marines who live in the barracks, it is difficult to find tools and the space to perform remedial car maintenance. Even if there was a space for maintenance, there are still a few problems a backyard mechanic may face such as not having the right tools or experience to do it right.
