Vice Adm. John J. Donnelly, commander submarine forces, visited the USS Rhode Island (SSBN 740) April 18. He toured the ship and visited with the wardroom in a question-and-answer session.

His conversation with the wardroom focused on some of the issues that face junior officers, specifically workload reduction, job satisfaction, and integrity.

"Interacting with submariners is the best part of my job. In talking with them, many personnel issues come to light. For example, last year IA (Individual Augmentee) billets were a major concern for junior officers. This year that concern is minimal," remarked Donnelly.

Afterwards, he joined the crew in a bowling party put on by the Rhode Island Recreation Committee. While there he was able to enjoy a slice of pizza and meet many Rhode Island Sailors and their families.

"Having the admiral come out and join us for pizza and bowling was great. I think he really enjoyed our ideas for rewarding the crew for their hard work," said MT3(SS) Brian Sheffield, Recreation Committee Vice-President.

The Rhode Island Recreation Committee funds command events like pizza parties, barbeques, and softball games as a way to reward Sailors for their hard work and dedication. Additionally, they help to recognize the crew's outstanding efforts to remain DUI-free for over 450 days and counting.

"The command is committed to maintaining high morale during our extended refit period to ensure on-time completion," said Cmdr. Mark M. Marty, commanding officer, USS Rhode Island (SSBN 740)(Gold). He continued, "We plan these events every three weeks to say thanks to the crew and their families. It was a great bonus that the crew had the opportunity to meet Adm. Donnelly at the party."

Later that evening, Donnelly spoke at the Kings Bay Officer Submarine Ball. In his speech he remarked on the past, present, and future of the submarine force.
