Cmdr. Kevin S. Mooney relieved Cmdr. Mark M. Marty.
Marty delivered the welcoming remarks and Capt. Dan Mack, Commander Submarine Squadron 16, served as the principal speaker.
Marty took command of Rhode Island (Gold) on March 14, 2008. During his command, Rhode Island completed the most comprehensive Extended Refit period ever performed on an Ohio-class submarine, sea trials, weapons system recertification and one strategic deterrent patrol.
Additionally, the ship received the 2008 Fleet Forces Retention Excellence Award, the 2008 Submarine Squadron Twenty Supply Blue "E" and honorable mention honors in the 2009 Captain Edward F. Ney Award for food service excellence.
"It has been a privilege and an honor to serve with the crew of Rhode Island (Gold)," Marty said. "They have been incredible, and I have had a blast. I will truly miss them."
Marty previously served aboard USS Alexandria (SSN 757), USS Maine (SSBN 741) (Blue) and as executive officer aboard USS Kentucky (SSBN 737) (Blue). Marty's next assignment will be at Submarine Group Ten.
Prior to relieving Marty, Mooney served aboard USS James K. Polk (SSN 645), USS Michigan (SSBN 727) (Gold) and as executive officer aboard USS Bremerton (SSN 698).
Most recently, Mooney served on the Submarine Squadron Sixteen staff as the Deputy for Tactical Readiness.
"I am honored to have the opportunity to command Rhode Island (Gold)," Mooney said. "Commander Marty has turned over a great crew. I am excited to lead such an outstanding group of men."
Rhode Island is the third U.S. Naval Ship to be name in honor of the 13th state in the union. The submarine was commissioned July 9, 1994 and has completed 44 patrols.
