USS Maryland (SSBN 738) was announced as the winner of the 2008 Omaha Submarine Ballistic Missile Trophy, Aug. 18.

The Omaha trophy is presented annually to strategic commands with the highest performance standards, based on evaluations, safety and meritorious achievements.

"I could not be prouder that the professionals of Maryland; both crews were selected for this prestigious award. It is an honor to say that they are part of Submarine Group 10," said Rear Adm. Barry Bruner, commander, Submarine Group 10.

The Omaha trophy was originally presented to the Strategic Air Command (SAC) by the SAC Consultation Committee in 1971 on behalf of the citizens of Omaha, Neb. The trophy was presented to the command with the request that it be awarded annually to the outstanding SAC wing.

Since 1971, the number of Omaha trophies has increased to four. The trophies are now awarded for intercontinental ballistic missile, submarine ballistic missile, strategic aircraft and strategic space and information operations.

"I am extremely proud USS Maryland was recognized as the ballistic missile submarine, demonstrating the highest standards of performance in support of our nation's strategic deterrence mission of 2008" said Capt. Kevin Brenton, commodore, Submarine Squadron 20. "The sustained superior performance of both Maryland crews made this possible and is a true testament to the outstanding young sailors that volunteer to serve their country and perform this vitally important mission."
