Base asseses damage caused by Fay

Tropical Storm Fay has come and gone, while Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay and its wallet are still hurting from the more than $250,000 worth of damages sustained during the slow moving storm just two weeks ago.

The extent of the damages being repaired at the Land Mobile Repair building has caused the staff at Public Works to work extra hard to get the base back to its normal appearance. The biggest damage occurred Aug. 22 at approximately 2 p.m. Land Mobile's building was the recipient of a large water oak tree falling on the back end of the building and damaging the roof as well as the storage area where MWR housed some of its supplies. Luckily, there were no personnel in the building during the incident.

"The Land Mobile building was the most costly damage, primarily impacting Morale, Welfare and Recreation and their items that were held in the storage area of the building," said Assistant Public Works Officer Andy Buzbee. "The other damages were minor which included approximately seven light poles blowing over, leaking roofs and windows, ruptured conduit, and air conditioning panels being ripped off."

With this storm, the base learned to prepare for future storms more efficiently by going through their checklist and ensuring that the lagoons are drawn down, fueling up the generators and fueling up vehicles for the recovery stages of the storm if necessary. "In a serious storm, we would have to work even harder then we did for Fay," said Buzbee. "Thankfully, we only sustained minor damage with the exception of Land Mobile roof damage and the minor roof and window leaks. In the end, this storm has helped us better prepare for the upcoming tropical storms that might be headed our way."
